The Cartouches > Boston
Boston
An amalgam scene of Boston monuments in monochromatic colors is set within an early 19th century American cartouche and framework.
Flanking that are two heroic allegorical figures: On the left is a Shawmut pilgrim, and on the right is the Charles River.
Behind the two figures is a wall of ivy, recalling the Ivy League universities, in the area. Around the edge is the mayflower and hidden amongst its blossoms is the famous Make Way for Ducklings sculpture at the Commons.

The Cartouches > Angola on the Lake
Angola on the Lake
A monochromatic amalgam of downtown Angola sights are seen in a mid 19th century Neoclassical American cartouche and frame.
Two heroic allegorical figures bracket the frame: on the left is a man from the Seneca nations, holding a peace pipe. He looks over at an allegory of Lake Erie with the Niagara Falls cascading down his thighs. Behind them are deciduous trees, which grow in profusion in the area.
Framing the scene is the common milkweed which grows in the area and attracts monarch butterflies and gypsy moths.

The Cartouches > Salzburg
Salzburg
A monochromatic view of the Baroque towers of Salzburg is framed by an ornate rococo frame with a gilded cherubs head at the bottom. On the left is an allegorical figure of the Salzach River pouring salt into his mouth from a baroque salt cellar. The river was an important artery for transporting salt from the region to many parts of Europe.
The other figure on the right is still a bit ambiguous, and will be worked on. He is an amalgam of Archbishop Colloredo and Mozart, as both of those figures were very important in the history of Salzburg. Mozart for obvious reasons with his contributions to music, and Colloredo as he transformed Salzburg from an industrial backwater to the baroque jewel, it is we know today.
The scene is surrounded by entwined Edelweiss, which is a regional flower that is seen in many interpretations in the area: clothing, dinnerware, advertising, etc

Katzentanz
Katzentanz
A merry painting of revelers from various eras, Katzentanz, a word which I made up for a scribble I did on a note to my Mom as a child.
While writing the note, some Vivaldi was playing on the radio, and I did a quick drawing of a woman dancing with a cat, as the plinking mandolins made me think of a cat's movements.
Since Mom still has the note saved somewhere, I thought I would make an expanded version of the scene, and this is the result.

The Cocktails > Stinger
The Stinger
One in the series of classic American cocktails, the Stinger dates back to 1890!
A simple two-ingredient cocktail, it was a popular drink during the American Prohibition. One of the two ingredients, crème de menthe, could mask the taste of the other ingredient, the poor-quality brandies then available.
